JoAnn Falletta, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director, receives the Marian de Forest Community Service Award from Zonta International A representative of Zonta International presented the first Marian de Forest Community Service Award to BPO Music Director JoAnn Falletta at Kleinhans Music Hall, Buffalo, New York. Marian de Forest was both the founder of Zonta International and co-founder of the Buffalo Music Foundation. The award, named in her honor, was presented every two years to an individual who demonstrated commitment to improving the quality of life of the community.

Long-time Buffalo Zontian Virginia L. Cummings, Director of the Buffalo Museum of Science from 1970 to 1979 Dr. Virginia L. Cummings dedicated most of her life and career to the Buffalo Museum of Science, first as the Curator of Anthropology and later in administrative roles. Her father Carlos E. Cummings was the Buffalo Museum of Science Assistant Director and, later, Director, while she was growing up. Virginia served as Museum Director from 1970-1979 . During her tenure, exhibits were modernized, special displays were mounted and fund-raising drives were initiated for the first time. She passed away on April 16, 1997.
