Oswaldo Mestre has stepped
down from his position as president
of the Black Student Union, citing
personal reasons for his resigna
tion.
He announced his resignation
during a regular BSU meeting ear
lier this month. Vice President
Kurt Young assumed the office of
president in accordance with B SU's
constitution.
"I have been involved in student
government for three and a half
years, and it'ss taking its toll on me,"
Mestre said last week.
He explained that he has im
proved the BSU as much as he can,
and he did not want to allow BSU to
suffer due to his time constraints.
"I wanted to leave while BSU
was still at its best and let someone
else take it over," Mestre said.
Young said that although
Mestre 's resignation came unex
pectedly. he believes he will also
make a good president.
Power shift is smooth
Young commented that he can
handle the job and that the organi
zation has good members. He has
not heard any complaints or criti
cisms concerning the sudden shift

"We've
worked hard
organizing
events
for Black
History
month, and
we wanted
that to be
the focus of
attention."

of power.
"Everyone is taking the change
well," Young said.
Mestre said that many people do
not know about the change because
they wanted to wait until after Black
History Month to announce the
changes publicly.

"We•ve worked hard organizing
events for Black History Month,
and we wanted that to be the focus
of auention," he said.
Elections to fill the vice-presi
dential office vacated by Young
will be held next month.
